The Snyder cut : A movement - Saransh Sawant

DC’s super renowned Justice League was given its own movie which was released in October 2017. Initially, the movie was supposed to be directed by Zack Snyder who also directed Batman vs Superman: Dawn of justice and Superman’s origin story known by the name “Man of steel” but due to a family tragedy he had to step down as director of Justice League. However, Joss Whedon took over as an executive producer but he did not claim credits for direction. Anyway, Joss Whedon changed the entire course of the movie by performing re-shoots, changing the script almost entirely, cutting down scenes which included some major characters. With its initial runtime which was supposed to be 214 minutes (3 hours and 34 mins) as Zack Snyder had planned it to be, it was cut down to 120 minutes (2 hours) by Joss Whedon.
The movie ended up disappointing the fans big time, receiving mixed reviews and it was expected as the heavy modifications made to the movie from inside out gave all of us a completely different concept of the league. This moved the fans attention to the original version which is labelled as the “SNYDER CUT” but what is so interesting about it and what does it originally contain?
Starting with the scene where planet Earth is invaded in the past , it was supposed to be for a longer period of time with Darkseid leading the invasion and faced off against the immortal God Ares in place of Steppenwolf. Wonder woman was to be credited for the death of Steppenwolf by cutting his head off with the mighty sword of Athena which was followed by the cut off head rolling down to Darkseid's feet and the Justice League looking at him through the boom tube.
Cyborg learning more about himself and also his origin story was cut down. The flash had a major part during the fight after superman was resurrected and went all crazy on the other members of the league. He was taking up fight with superman by trying to kick him actively with his superspeed. Aquaman was supposed to see his father Thomas curry and the storyline would have been continued later in the film “Aquaman”.
There was an alternate version of Superman which we were supposed to witness. The version of this Superman included him in a black suit. The battle after he was resurrected was supposed to take place during night time with the military included in the fight too and about Batman, there surely would have been a better version of him in the Snyder cut with more combat and technical skills. Also, the fans have been missed out on a potential villain and their favourite one “Deathstroke”. Whedon tried to add a bit of humour to the movie which clearly didn’t work out and doesn’t suit the movie either. This information led to a movement known as “Release the Snyder cut” because Joss Whedon's version did no justice to the film at all.
Fans have been insanely serious about this movement, they are not doing it just for the sake of it and on the release day itself more than 180k+ fans signed a petition to release the original cut as the released movie was clearly wasn’t worth the wait. Not only the fans, the acting cast itself prefers the Snyder cut and have been supporting this movement. Cast members like Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher, Gal Gadot and Joe Manganiello have been tweeting about it. Jason Momoa has stated that he has already seen the movie and wants it to be released. Fans on social media platforms like Instagram have been using the hashtag “#releasethesnydercut” on their pictures and videos so that it is brought to the attention of maximum people including Zack Snyder.
Zack Snyder has been handling DC characters very well in the past few years and the fans have witnessed it. It is no doubt that his version of the Justice League will actually do justice to the movie. Warner Bros entertainment does not plan on releasing the original cut anytime soon but all we can hope for is the movie to be brought in front of the people, the fans who have been waiting for it, for everyone who has been part of “release the Snyder cut movement” and also for those who preferred to change the script and experimented on this strong storyline. Only then, true JUSTICE will be served to all. #releasethesnydercut.
