You missed this when you watched TITANIC! - Saransh Sawant

The movie Titanic is known to be an all-time classic which covers the story of 2 people of different social classes falling in love during their voyage on the ship which takes an ill-fated turn towards the end. Starring Leonardo Di Caprio as Jack Dawson, Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater and with director James Cameron, Titanic was nominated for 14 academy awards. The team ended up winning 11 out of the 14 nominated sectors which included the best director, best original music score and best picture as well.

Most of us are familiar with the part towards the end where the ship crashes into an iceberg which leads to the ship sinking and the love story coming to an end as Jack died because of hypothermia (a condition where the core human body temperature is below 35 degree Celsius) after helping out Rose get on a wooden panel long enough to survive in the freezing water. Although there were multiple survivors when the ship sank, the story and role of Charles Joughin stand out when it comes to how he survived the few last moments on the ship as it was sinking.

Charles Joughin was the head/chief baker who was on board the Titanic. When the ship hit the iceberg, he made sure that all lifeboats were filled to the maximum number of prioritizing women and children first. He is credited for throwing more than 50 deck chairs in the water for people to use as a floatation device and also giving up his own reserved seat in one of the lifeboats. You may have seen him in the movie as a guy who always carried around a flask with him but how did he survive the crash?

During the time when he was helping others get off-board, chief Joughin was consuming a heck load of alcohol, whiskey mainly and by heck load, we are talking about entire bottles here. It is known that he was completely hammered the entire time the ship was about to sink. He is also known to be the last person to get off the Titanic and that too without even getting his hair wet. It is claimed that he was right on the very tip of the ship when it sank.

The alcohol in his system helped him survive in the freezing water for 3 hours. The first lifeboat which sailed by him could not save him as it was already filled but eventually another lifeboat came by and he was rescued. The best part of all , the only thing this noble Englishman remembers from the night of the Titanic sinking is in fact he had a blistering hangover the next day.

So next time if you plan on watching this movie, do lookout for our drunken hero and also, if you’re on a ship that’s sinking , you know exactly what has to be done!
